Have you noticed the Notifications button in the lower right corner of your Facebook page? A bright red number will display if there are new notifications. Some folks might like these notifications if they play games, etc.
However, some folks find this hot red "Alert" annoying. If you check your Live Feed daily, and/or receive emails with the Facebook updates you're most interested in, many of the notifications are redundant. And sometimes they're not that interesting; e.g. someone you don't know has commented on a friends status.
You can eventually deactivate the Notifications button in Facebook, but you may not be able to deactiviate it in one Facebook session. And by the way, turning off these notifications has no impact on the Email Notifications you have specified under Settings | Account Settings and then clicking the Notifications tab.
Here is what you do:
As time passes, you may have to repeat the above process for a notification "type" that was not present when you began to Hide Notifications.
Cheers!

And by the way, turning off these notifications has no impact on the Email Notifications you have specified under Settings | Account Settings and then clicking the Notifications tab.
Here is what you do:
- Hover over the right edge of a notification until a black X appears and click the X. Then click Hide All and Facebook will hide all notifications from that application, or type of notification (like being tagged in a photo.)
- Repeat this process for all of the different kinds of notifications. If there is an action that you don't receive an email on but would like to be notified about; e.g. someone "Liking" something you have posted, don't hide this type of notification.
- To see your changes take effect, log off of Facebook and log back in. Now when you click the Notifications button, it will be empty or near empty.
As time passes, you may have to repeat the above process for a notification "type" that was not present when you began to Hide Notifications.
Cheers!
